Assisting the victims of Hurricane Katrina - 2005
The passage of Hurricane Katrina at the end of August 2005 caused enormous damage along the gulf coast of the USA. In the aftermath, Pernod Ricard USA donated $100,000 to help victims. The generosity of Group employees at this time was quite remarkable. A special collection was made within the company to support two of its employees who, although safe and sound, were made homeless by Katrina. Every donation made by employees was matched by Pernod Ricard USA, which also provided temporary accommodation, a car and everything else required to get the individuals concerned back on their feet.
Helping tsunami victims - 2004
In 2004, Pernod Ricard’s Thai sales force won an incentive trip to France in recognition of their excellent sales record. But after the tsunami struck, every team member agreed to forego the trip and donate the cash equivalent to rebuilding schools and funding the studies of children orphaned by the disaster. The result was a donation of €200,000 locally, with a further €600,000 donated by the Group to the leading NGOs working on the ground.
Building drinking water tanks for Tortuga (“Ile de la Tortue”)– 2005/2006

The island of Tortuga is located northwest of Haiti. This is a very poor region affected alternately by severe drought and tropical storms, and was hard-hit in 2004 by the cyclone Jeanne. In 2005, Pernod Ricard provided financial support for APPEL, an international aid organisation dedicated to improving the living conditions of children worldwide, and active in Haiti.
The Group’s donation of €65,000 will enable the construction of 65 drinking water tanks on Tortuga. These new facilities will significantly improve living conditions for the 36,000 residents, over half of whom are aged under 15. This improved access to drinking water is vital for an island with no natural springs and no adequate distribution infrastructure.
Pernod Ricard and Appel: an exemplary partnership
The Group’s business taught all its employees that access to high-quality water was a privilege and that, for many people, happiness would be access to any kind of drinking water. This is why Pernod Ricard has focused its humanitarian sponsorship initiatives on this issue by supporting APPEL, an international organisation committed to taking direct practical action to help children and their families.
For over thirty years, APPEL has been bringing together volunteers, doctors, engineers and teachers who share the same vision of sustainable and supportive development to implement health and education initiatives for the most underprivileged children in the world’s poorest countries.
In 2005 and 2006, Group aid has been used to help the people of Tortuga, an island northwest of Haiti.
